Nowadays, it’s hard to find a person who does not know anything about the role movement. Each of us, at least briefly, but heard about strange uncles and aunts, periodically traveling into the forest to reincarnate in their favorite fantasy characters and go in search of adventure in the enchanting world of sword and magic away from civilization. Recent office planktons, students and ordinary proletarians of all ages forget about worldly life for several days and try on the skin of militant gnomes, proud elves or even unholys, revived dead. The potentially possible setting of the game and the bestiary of its inhabitants is limited only by the imagination of participants and organizers.
“Childhood in the ass has played out,” the vast majority of people who did not take part in any such reconstruction say. Those who have been running around the suburban training grounds will say that they happened to survive a rather interesting experience that will not be a sin to repeat and next season.
But no matter what anyone says, one cannot deny the fact that the Roleviks have long managed to become an independent and very large subculture. And from the mummers and magicians, you can hear many interesting stories and tanks that open the veil of secrets over this unusual community. In addition, among the players there are especially outstanding personalities who will remain in the memory of experienced “adventurers’ rangers” for a long time, and under other circumstances, perhaps, they will even acquire the status of folklore heroes. The history of our heroes begins in 1993, when the very first role -playing gatherings under the uncomplicated name “Hobbit Games” began to be held in Russia. A group of young people came to one of these gatherings in the Leningrad region – large lovers to swarm and tear themselves to a fullest, for which they will forever get their well -deserved place in the annals of the history of role -playing party. Starting from the very first games, future elves constantly arranged scandals and pogroms at landfills, not without the use of alcohol, rough power and hallucinogenic substances.
Thanks to the latter, the group received its famous nickname. They often used Psilocybe Semilanceata – psilocybian gangs that cause severe drug intoxication. From that they were known as "mushroom pickers". The elves called them for a much simpler reason: young players, at the beginning of their career, familiar with the fantasy genre only on the work of Sir Tolkien, did not come up with anything better than playing the most attractive races of the immortal inhabitants of the distant forests of Lorian. Subsequently, mushrooms never parted with their new role and even created a very voluminous legislative framework governing relations both within the group itself and with other members of the role -playing community.
The subculture that came from the West was then just formed, and the first years of large -scale “role -playing” were associated, first of all, with the not -competent organization of direct action and the emergence of a large number of associations that actively promote their own vision of how similar gatherings should look like.

Mushroom elves, with each new sortie acquired more and more bad fame, considered most of their colleagues in the workshop mediocre cowards who are afraid to go beyond the existing script. The elves were supporters of a realistic approach, implying the complete unpredictability of everything that could happen at the landfill, whether it be vile theft, large -scale arson, cruel bullying, massive beatings or a drunken brawl (our heroes did not shy away even such methods of conducting a suburban leisure. A similar philosophy, coupled with extremely causing and sometimes dangerous for the surrounding behavior, led to the fact that closer to the mid-90s, the organizers of the open-air games simply began to forbid them to appear in accountable territories.
It was then that the most interesting. The witty people offended by this attitude not only spit on the stated prohibitions, but also continued to evil to everyone to carry their active civil position in role masses. At first they managed to slip to the training grounds, hiding under other people’s names. This continued until the already numerous St. Petersburg role -playing moves of their faces were printed in the memory of every second player. Now the “curtains”, as the elves themselves called them, were alarming and took up an impromptu medieval weapon, as soon as they had seen familiar figures of the horror of the “Tolkien sadists”.

Now, having learned about the upcoming game, information about which with all their mights hid from other people’s ears, mushrooms secretly went to the place of the deployment of future players and equipped a barely noticeable camp near the playground. In the light of the day, young anarchists indulged in the active use of psychoactive substances, unreasonable drunkenness and preparations for future sorties. With the onset of darkness, the elves penetrated the territory of the landfill and by hook or by crook tried to spoil the rest of the unlucky role. They stole supplies from imprudent organizers, stole the gaping players and provoked the most daring of them to go in pursuit of attackers. As it is easy to guess, the brave hunters who were in a dark forest alone with the “mushroom pickers” instantly turned into the category of unmistakable victims of the “long -eared hooligans”.

At one point, it became dangerous to attend such events in his native Leningrad region due to broad publicity, therefore the elves continued to conduct their active “role-playing” activities in other games, which, closer to the beginning of the new millenium, were already everywhere carried out on the entire post-Soviet space. However, this did not last long. The older the shabby schoolchildren became older, the more time they devoted to their other hobby.
Since 1997, mushrooms took part in the voluntary movement of the St. Petersburg environmental organization, where they patrolled the polystyan reserve and prevented the deforestation of Yelnikov by poachers and other ill -wishers. But, which is not surprising, even here they managed to go beyond their duties and even received some income from fraud with confiscated wood.
The longer the elves “stood on the guard of ecology”, the more authority and creative freedom they received from their immediate superiors. As a result, the composition of their team was replenished with the players familiar from past gatherings, friendly skinheads and other periocorous bulk, and the organization itself reached a completely new level. They held five large -scale environmental campaigns throughout the region that did not go unnoticed by the press. Many local newspapers condemned the activities of young inspectors fighting their branded methods “with the severity of the Stalinist triples”. Without serious damage to state -owned equipment, mass beatings and shooting from firearms, of course, there were not. A similar public resonance led to the fact that, upon request from the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, they were excluded from the environment as persons suspected of radical activity.
With the cessation of their field activity, the elves went into the Internet space, where they created several thematic resources. There they were engaged in network mockery over the wrong, in their opinion, players. At the same time, the newly made trolls arranged raids on popular thematic sites and forums, where they continued to fight the "distinguished position in the midst of St. Petersburg role -players". It was during this period that the most loud and most “yellowed” materials of the “military propaganda” of mushrooms were published.
Since 2003, the team, by and large, broke up and continued to exist as a group of independent network publicists. And in 2008, a manifesto was published on the elves website, which reports that the organization has ceased radical socio-political activities and officially retired.

Many could have thought that such a scale of atrocities and injuries could be carried out by a team consisting of a huge number of people, and the rumors allowed in the 90s claimed that the composition of mushrooms had more than a hundred people. In fact, the main backbone of the organization consisted of less dozen participants. Even many years later, they are extremely reluctant to share information about themselves. However, some information about the current life of the main defendants in this case can still be found in Runet.
Johnny became one of the founders of the ideology of the elves. He possessed a great word and was famous for a good literary talent. It was he who wrote most of the existing publications of the group, which includes the autobiographical book “Tales of the Dark Forest”, describing the life and exploits of the elves in detail on behalf of the author himself. This monograph is still in the public domain on the main website of the team and is the most exhaustive, albeit not deprived of some artisticos of information from the source of information not only about the activities of our heroes in particular, but also the state of affairs within the Russian role movement of the 90s as a whole.

The remaining members of the association did not differ much on the open spaces of the network, and now almost nothing is known about them. Here are just some scraps of information. In 2005, Barina and a little later Max Bravo rejected her heart, tired of powerful binges from both figures. Feri, inconsistent, committed suicide, jumping under the train. Goblin, Crazy and Macclaud brought up families and live a calm peaceful life, and the latter still remains a great fan of role -playing games, which he often visits to this day.

Despite the very specific field of mushroom activity, they are perhaps one of the most lively illustrations of the fussy of the youth who lived in Russia at the turn of the century. Disputes about their meaning for role -playing parties of that time still cause lively verbal skirmishes in the vastness of thematic portals. Let the events described in Johnny’s memoirs are true only partly, and eyewitnesses of the events of those years all the years say that these villains were only interested in chaotic pogroms and abuse of prohibited substances, we cannot deny the obvious. Mushroom elves are a unique phenomenon not only for the St. Petersburg game community, but for all Russian youth in general.
Their radical shares against the "wrong" role -players served as a good impetus to improve the organizational process of future games. It was “Ecological terrorists” who revealed the main shortcomings of the role of the 90s, namely disunity and non-concern. As a result, the threat that suddenly hanging over ordinary players in the form of a gang of mushroom elves forced the organizers to more responsibly approach the game and take care of the comfort of the enthusiasts participating in it.
A separate word should be noted “Tales of the Dark Forest”, which can be safely called one of the most extraordinary and worthy attention of representatives of alternative Russian literature. Full of obscene abuse and comprehensive blackness, but still a significant artistic work that gives the reader, perhaps excessively hyperbolized, but still extremely alive and, most importantly, a very frank and authentic idea of the life of socio-active youth of those years.
Well, in the end, the amazing phenomenon of mushroom elves, with all its immorality and insanity, is still entertaining material for study, which, most likely, will not turn your idea of the essence of the universe, but will definitely be able to accurately amuse and cheer up the mood of the mood.
